Championship Bound! Otters Defeat East Bay 5-4 to Punch Ticket to WWPA Title Match

Megan Taylor wills Otters to WWPA Semifinal victory over Cal State East Bay

O'FALLON, ILL. –
Cal State Monterey Bay Water Polo is championship bound after a 5-4 victory over Cal State East Bay Saturday at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

The Otters built a 3-0 lead in the first quarter through a solid balance of opportunistic offense and stifling defense. The Pioneers responded, cutting the deficit to one goal through three quarters and tying things up at 4-4 in the fourth. That was until Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) scored her third goal of the match with some help from Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) with 3:46 to go. Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) closed out the contest with three saves in the final three plus minutes to secure the Otter victory.

Fortune scored her third consecutive hat trick to lead the Otter offense. Taylor put together her best of many solid performances allowing just four goals and tallying 11 saves and an assist.

THE GAME WAS OVER… Megan Taylor picked up her 11th save of the match with 12 seconds remaining to secure the 5-4 victory.

A GAME OF FIRSTS… This win marks the Otters first over East Bay since 2015. This also marks the first time in program history that the Otters will be playing for the WWPA Championship.

THREE FOR THREE… Shelby Fortune notched her third consecutive hat trick, continuing her incredible sophomore campaign. Fortune now has tallied 46 goals this season, good for 18th most by an Otter in a single season. She also has netted 70 career goals, good for 15th most all-time.

THE BEST KIND OF LOW… Megan Taylor surrendered just four goals in this match, her lowest mark for a complete game performance between the posts. Her previous best was six goals allowed, which she did in last season's WWPA Tournament against Mercyhurst.

THE LAST WORD… We came out really strong today, doing a great job carrying over yesterday's energy into today's game. And then we did what we do best, we focused on our game and played for each other. – Head Coach Emily Schmit

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will take on the winner of Biola and Fresno Pacific for the WWPA Championship tomorrow at 1:15 PM CST (11:15 AM PST).
