Otters Cinderella Run Comes to an End in the WWPA Championship Match

Kaya Eaton tallies two goals and an assist, as Otters fall to Biola 10-3, finish second at the WWPA Tournament

O'FALLON, ILL. –
In their first ever appearances in the WWPA Championship match, CSUMB Water Polo came up just short against Biola 10-3 Sunday at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

These two squads locked in a punch for punch bout to start this contest, as the Otters and Eagles found themselves tied up at 3-3 in the third quarter, as the Otters got a big boost from freshman Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix HS). Eaton tallied a pair of goals and an assist in the first three quarters, but that was all the offense that the Otters could muster, as the Eagles would score seven unanswered goals to close out the match in their favor 10-3.

Eaton led the Otters offense with a pair of goals and an assist, while Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) also found the back of the net, and Zoe Reid (Pleasanton/Foothill HS) and Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS) each recorded an assist.

This marks the end of the Otters 2023 season, as they finish with an 8-21 record and a second place finish, their best in program history, at the WWPA Tournament.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Eagles converted on their second five-meter penalty of the third quarter push ahead 8-3.

A STAR IS BORN… Freshman Kaya Eaton has been a solid scoring threat all season long, but today, put together one of the best performances of her Otter career. The San Diego native tallied a pair of goals and an assist while also being credited with a steal. Eaton finishes off her freshman campaign with 23 goals, good for second on the team, and most amongst freshmen.

A TOURNEY TO REMEMBER… Goalkeeper Megan Taylor made double digit saves in each of the three tournament matches this weekend. With her 11 saves today, she ran her weekend total 36 saves, and her season total to 296.

TAKE A BOW, OTTERS… Although they came up one win short, the Otters put together a historic run at the 2023 WWPA Tournament. This was the Otters first ever trip to the championship match, and they made this stellar run as the bottom seed from the western region. The Otters will look to keep this momentum rolling into the offseason and into the 2024 season next Spring.

FINAL LEADERS… GOALS: Shelby Fortune 47; ASSISTS: Allyson Ainsworth 27; POINTS: Shelby Fortune 57; DRAWN EXCLUSIONS: Abigail Summers 42; STEALS: Autumn Day/Megan Taylor 28; FIELD BLOCKS; Amanda Bennett/Gabri Vincze 7; SAVES: Megan Taylor 296
