Otters Stun Top Seeded McKendree in Overtime Thriller to Open WWPA Tournament

Fortune’s OT brace, Taylor’s heroics propels CSUMB past host Bearcats 10-8

O'FALLON, ILL. –
CSUMB Water Polo picked up a statement win to open up the WWPA Tournament, downing top seeded McKendree 10-8 in overtime Friday morning at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.

The Otters fell behind 4-0 in the first quarter, but would outscore the Bearcats 10-4 in the final three periods and overtime to notch arguably their biggest win of the season. Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) was the first Otter to find the back of the net, jumpstarting the comeback effort in the second quarter. Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) would score as time expired in the first half, to bring the score to 5-2, but, more importantly, to seize momentum for the Otters going into the halftime break.

CSUMB played like a different team in half two, outscoring McKendree 6-3, including a pair of late, unanswered fourth quarter goal by Zoe Reid (Pleasanton/Foothill HS) and Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS) to force overtime. In the extra frames, the Otters turned to their offensive firecracker, Shelby Fortune, who would score the go-ahead goal in the first overtime period before putting the game out of reach with her second OT goal with less than a minute remaining in the final OT frame.

Fortune was responsible for three goals in this one, notching her ninth hattrick of the season. Summers picked up her fourth multi-goal match of the season, scoring a pair against the Bearcats. Just as impressive as the goal scorers were the Otter distributors, headlined by Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS), who picked up a career-best five assists. Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) was heroic between the posts, notching 14 saves, denying good look after good look generated by the Bearcat attack.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Shelby Fortune scored her second overtime goal to push the Otters ahead 10-8 with 0:58 remaining in the final overtime period.

A FLARE FOR THE DRAMATIC… Shelby Fortune continued her stellar season as the focal point of the Otter offensive with yet another hat trick performance. Today's performance, however, was especially awe inspiring based off of when Fortune's goals were scored. Her first came at the 0:05 mark of the second quarter to bring the Otters within three at the halftime break. This goal sparked a momentous flame in the Otters that would stay ablaze throughout the remainder of the contest. Fortune would not score for the rest of regulation time, however, she was who the Otters turned to when they needed her most in overtime. Fortune scored a pair in the extra frames that would push the Otters to the opening round victory.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST… The Otters scored seven of the final eight goals in this contest, including the final four goals of the match en route to the victory. The long run began when Shea Tully found the back of the net midway through the third quarter, bringing the score to 7-4 in favor of the Bobcats, and culminated with the Otter victorious by a tally of 10-8.

THE QUEEN OF THE ASSIST… Allyson Ainsworth continues to be a master distributor in the pool for the Otters. The sophomore picked up a career-best five assists in today's contest, bringing her season total to 27. Ainsworth has now picked up an assist in each of the last nine contests.

A BRICK WALL… If Megan Taylor were playing charades in today's contest, this would clearly have been what she was impersonating. The sophomore goalkeeper stopped 14 McKendree shots en route to her seventh victory of the season between the pipes. The 14 saves were third most for her this season, and second most in a winning effort for the Otters, as Taylor was able to record 15 saves in a winning effort over Santa Clara on Jan. 28.

TOP FOUR GUARANTEED… With today's win, the Otters have guaranteed at least a fourth place finish in the WWPA tournament. This also guarantees the Otters best finish at the WWPA tournament since 2018, when they finished in fourth place.

THE LAST WORD…  "We knew that if we just played our game, we would win. We focused on our game plan, and our preparation showed, especially as we entered the fourth quarter and throughout OT. I am extremely impressed with the team's composure today, and we are excited to take this energy into the semis tomorrow!" – Head Coach Emily Schmit

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters are onto the semifinals, as they will take on the second seed in the West, Cal State East Bay. This will mark the fourth meeting between the Otters and Pioneers this season. First sprint is set for 12:30 PM CST (10:30 AM PST).
