Otters Postseason Bound After Wild Split

CSUMB secures CCAA Tournament bid, reduces magic number to six

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 18 Cal State Monterey Bay earned an invitation to its own party after splitting a doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters dropped Game 1, 13–12 in 10 innings, but bounced back to earn a 5–2 win in Game 2.

With the victory, CSUMB (27–12, 24–7 CCAA) is assured a spot in the CCAA Tournament Field, which the Otters will host May 10–13.

The Otters won the nightcap with a strong pitching performance from Nate Rohlicek (Gilbert, Ariz./Univ. of Nevada), who allowed two runs and struck out four over six innings. RBI doubles by Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College) and Drew Williams (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) highlighted the offense effort.

The Otters seemed well on their way to a sweep Saturday when they carried a 12–6 lead into the ninth inning of the opener. But a key error by Kyle Barileau at third based kept the door ajar for the Toros, and they scored six unearned runs with two outs to tie the game, the final four coming on an Aaron Greenfield grand slam.

Eric Smelko homered leading off the 10th to give the Toros the lead. The Otters appeared set to at least tie the game when Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) led off the home half of the 10th with a triple. But the heart of the Otter lineup couldn't bring him home.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo grounded out for the final out with the potential tying run on third base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Ryan Io came on in relief to coax a 6–4–3 double play from Aaron Greenfield, who represented the potential tying run.

IT TAKES A LITTLE MAGIC… With the CCAA season entering its final fortnight, its time to start calculating magic numbers for clinching the CCAA title. As a refresher, the magic number is the combination of Otter wins and opponent losses needed to guarantee finishing ahead of each team. There are four other teams with a mathematical possibility of winning the CCAA. CSUMB's magic number versus each is:
  • Cal State San Bernardino – 6
  • Cal Poly Pomona – 4
  • San Francisco State – 3
  • Stanislaus State – 3.
MORE CANON BALLS COMING… With home runs from JJ Engman and Nico Hartojo in Saturday's first game with Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Otters raised their season total to 38. That is good for the No. 4 spot in the Otter record book. They need 10 more long balls to match last season's squad for the No. 3 spot.

27 = 8… By winning their 27th game of the season Saturday versus Dominguez Hills, the 2023 Otters already have compiled the eighth most wins in a season in program history. The school record of 39 has been matched twice before (2013, 2016).

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR WILLIAMS… Drew Williams rapped three doubles Saturday versus Dominguez Hills, giving him 16 in 2023 and tying him for the No. 7 spot on the Otter single season doubles list. The last Otter to hit as many as 16 in a season was Kyle Dean, who did it in 2019. FYI, the Otter record is 20 set three times, last by Mark Hurley in 2014.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Drew Williams 2 (14, 15), JJ Engman (10), Dominic Felice (8). TRIPLES: Brady Miguel (2), Kyle Guerra (1). HOME RUNS: Nico Hartojo (6), JJ Engman (3).

GAME 2 EXTRA BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Chase Lindemann (6), Drew Williams (16). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Toros will conclude their 4–game series with a single game Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

GO OTTERS!
