Torres Dominates Toros In 10–4 Win

Sophomore southpaw throws seven innings of 2-hit, shutout ball

SEASIDE, Calif. — Sophomore southpaw Mitchell Torres (Santa Clarita/Mesa CC) was nothing short of dominant Sunday, tossing seven innings of 2–hit, shutout ball to lead No. 18 Cal State Monterey Bay to a 10–4 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Torres (4–1) allowed a leadoff single then retired 16 Toros in a row. In all he set down 21 of the 24 batters he faced, going past a 2–ball count on just one batter.

The Otter offense gave him ample support, scoring in four of the first five innings. Sophomore catcher Sergio Solis (Ceres/Central Valley HS) swung the big stick, driving in four runs with a 2–run homer in the second and a 2–run single in the fifth.

Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) and Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) also had 2–hit games. Chase Lindemann (Santa Clarita/Hartnell College), Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) and Drew Williams (San Benito HS/Cabrillo College) added doubles to the 10–hit Otter attack.

The win gave the Otters another CCAA series win, defeating the Toros 3–1. The Otters now stand alone in first place at 25–7 in CCAA play (28–12 overall). Dominguez Hills dipped to 19–23 and 14–18 in CCAA play.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… a 2–run single by Sergio Solis increased the Otter lead to 9–0 in the fifth inning.

28 = 7… By winning their 28th game of the season Sunday versus Dominguez Hills, the 2023 Otters already have compiled the seventh most wins in a season in program history. The school record of 39 has been matched twice before (2013, 2016).

BRADY MAKES IT A DOZEN… With his eighth inning double in Sunday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Brady Miguel ran his hitting streak to a season–high 12 games. He now has reached base in 36 consecutive games, which is the longest streak of the season by an Otter.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR WILLIAMS… Drew Williams rapped another double in Sunday's 10–4 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, giving him 17 in 2023 and tying him with Kevin Davidson (2016) for the No. 6 spot on the Otter single season doubles list. The last Otter to hit as many as 17 in a season was Myles Hager, who hit 18 in 2017. FYI, the Otter record is 20 set three times, last by Mark Hurley in 2014.

DOUBLE THE FUN FOR THE OTTERS… With Chase Lindemann, Brady Miguel, and Drew Williams all hitting doubles in Sunday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Otter now have 104 two-baggers this season, tying the 2016 team for No. 5 on the all–time list. The Otter record for doubles in a season is 118 set by the first-ever Otter baseball team in 2006.

THE MAGIC NUMBER IS 4… With Sunday's 10–4 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills — coupled with Chico State's 8–3 win over Cal State San Bernardino — the Otters reduced their magic number for clinching the CCAA title to four. As a refresher, the magic number is the combination of Otter wins and opponent losses needed to guarantee finishing ahead of each team. There are four other teams with a mathematical possibility of winning the CCAA. CSUMB's magic number versus each is:
  • Cal State San Bernardino – 4
  • Cal Poly Pomona – 2
  • San Francisco State – 2
  • Stanislaus State – 2
EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Drew Williams (17), Brady Miguel (13), Chase Lindemann (7). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Sergio Solis (2).

THE LAST WORD… "This was a good series win against a really strong hitting Dominguez Hills ball club. Mitchell Torres was lights out today and our offense was able to put some runs up early to give him a little cushion. I'm proud of our team, but we understand there is a lot of baseball left to play and we have goals we want to reach. Next up is a trip to Cal State L.A. L.A. has been tough on opponents at their place, so it will take us being at our best to accomplish what we want to accomplish." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Los Angeles to open a 4–game series at Cal State L.A. Apr. 28–30.
