Otters Fall to Biola 21-10 in Regular Season Finale

Fortune’s hat trick not enough to push Otters past Eagles

LA MIRADA, CALIF.
CSUMB Water Polo's regular season came to a close Friday in La MIrada, as they fell 21-10 to the Biola Eagles.

Biola seized momentum early in this one, building a 12-4 lead heading to the halftime break. The Otters mounted their best comeback effort midway through the third quarter, when a pair of Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) goals and a Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) goal cut the deficit to five, but that was as close as CSUMB would get, eventually falling 21-10.

Fortune led the way for the Otters offense with another hat trick performance to go along with an assist. Zoe Reid (Pleasanton/Foothill HS) and Hailey Alexander (Palos Verdes HS) each added a pair of goals, with Reid also adding an assist. Defensively, Fortune and Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS) each notched a pair of steals.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Biola opened the fourth quarter with a goal to push the score to 16-8 with 7:30 remaining.

BACK IN GOOD FORTUNE… After a pair of quiet weekends, Shelby Fortune looked back in full form today, tallying three goals, an assist and a pair of steals. Shelby has now run her season total to 40 goals, more than double the next closest Otter. She is the first Otter since Morgan Tucker (2019)  to score 40 goals in a season.

BRUISED AND BATTLING… Abigail Summers continues to be a major force for the Otters, drawing four exclusions in this one to give the Otters four chances with a player advantage. Her 39 drawn exclusions this season rank 12th most for an Otter in a single season.

OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE… Today's 10 goal output was the most the Otters have scored against a conference opponent this season. It was the sixth time they scored in double figures this season, and the most goals they've scored against Biola in program history.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be off next weekend before heading to O'Fallon, Illinois for the WWPA Tournament. The tournament will start on Apr. 28 and will run until Apr. 30.
