Otters Split Pair of Physical Contests on Day One of Claremont Convergence

Otters defeat Whittier 8-7 in OT, fall to #10 UCSB 20-3

CLAREMONT, CALIF. –
CSUMB Water Polo opened up their final regular season tournament of the year with a split, downing Whittier 8-7 and falling to #10 UCSB 20-3 Friday afternoon at the Axelrood Aquatic Center.

In their game one, overtime thriller with Whittier, the Otters got a big boost from Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) who returned from injury to notch her third hat trick of the season.  Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) added a career-high three assists, while Haley Alexander (Palos Verdes HS) notched a goal and an assist. It was Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix HS), however, who scored the eventual game-winning overtime goal that would lead the Otters to victory. Also providing a heroic effort for the Otters was Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) who denied 12 Whittier shot attempts in the victory.

Game two pitted the Otters against tenth ranked UC Santa Barbara for the second time this season. The Otters came out with some fire, scoring three first half goals, but UCSB would finish the match victorious by a tally of 20-3. Otter goals were scored by Fortune, Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) and Ximena Pichon (Clovis North HS), while Taylor stopped 16 Gaucho shots.

The Otters will be back at it tomorrow, with matchups against Chapman at 9 A.M. and Concordia Irvine at 3:15 P.M. to wrap up the Claremont Convergence Tournament.
