Otters Keep Rolling, Win Battle of the Bays Opener

Platero improves to 3-0, Tonna earns fourth save in 8-3 victory

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bats woke up as the game progressed, combining with a pair of strong pitching performances to pull away late in an 8–3, series-opening win over Cal State East Bay Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field.

Ryan Platero (San Benito HS/MPC) went 5 2/3 innings to earn the win and improve to 3–0. Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) continued to dominate, tossing 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief to pick up his fourth save of the season and his third save in seven days.

Platero allowed a home run to the first Pioneer batter he faced, but he quickly settled in. Consecutive RBI singles from San Benito grads Brady Miguel and Drew Williams in the third inning gave the Otters a 2–1 lead and they never trailed again.

East Bay closed to within 4–3 in the sixth inning, but a 2–run single by Dominic Felice (Hollister/Monte Vista Christian) opened the gates on a 4–run Otter ninth that put the game on ice.

THE WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna came on in relief with two outs in the sixth inning. He needed just one pitch to retire the side and the Pioneers never sniffed base over the final three frames.

MAKE THAT FIVE IN A ROW… Friday's 8–3 win at Cal State East Bay was the fifth consecutive victory for the Otters. Its their longest of the season and their longest since they won five straight from Apr. 23–30, 2022.

HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY… Chris Tonna earned his fourth save of 2023 with 3 1/3 innings of perfect relief Friday at Cal State East Bay. That mark already ranks No. 9 on the Otter single–season saves list. With his next save he will tie Parker Fokken (2019) for No. 8.

HERE HE COMES TO SAVE THE DAY, CAREER EDITION… Chris Tonna earned his 10th career save Friday at Cal State East Bay. That ties him with Parker Fokken (2019–22) and A.J. Quintero (2013–14) for No. 3 on the Otter career saves list. He needs three more to catch Connor Fabing for second place. Kyle Narahara (2016–17) holds the CSUMB record with 16 career saves.

EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Brady Miguel (7), Nico Hartojo 2 (6). TRIPLES: none. HOME RUNS: none.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series at Cal State East Bay with a doubleheader against the Pioneers starting Saturday at noon.
