Otters Double Up East Bay, Sweep Twinbill

Otters hit five doubles, run win streak to seven

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay doubled up on Cal State East Bay literally and figuratively Saturday, banging out five doubles in a 9–4, 7–1 doubleheader sweep at Pioneer Field.

With the victories, CSUMB (17–9, 15–4 CCAA) ran its winning streak to a season–best seven games. The Otters also clinched their fourth CCAA series win in five attempts so far in 2023.

JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College), Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS), Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) and Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) each collected four hits in the doubleheader. Fittingly, each of them counted a double amongst their hits.

Miguel also chipped in a triple while scoring four runs. Engman and Murchison both drove in four runs while Guerra collected three RBI. Robbie Treto (Arleta/L.A. Pierce College) added his fifth homer of the season in Game 1.

The Otter offense gave opening game starter Ryan Sleeman (San Jose/West Valley College) all the support he would need in the first inning when Engman and Murchison came through with 2–run doubles. CSUMB eventually extended its lead to 9–1 before the Pioneers scraped a couple back late.

Another Murchison RBI double capped a 2–run first inning in Game 2 that gave starter Nate Rohlicek (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler HS) all the support he would need. Rolicek went the full seven innings, scattering four hits while striking out six.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Robbie Treto's fifth home run of 2023 made it 8–1 in the fifth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Cole Murchison's RBI double made it 2–0 in the first. East Bay never sniffed the lead against junior righty Nate Rohlicek.

MAKE THAT SEVEN IN A ROW… Saturday's 9–4, 7–1 sweep at Cal State East Bay marked the sixth and seventh consecutive victories for the Otters. Its their longest of the season and their longest since they won eight straight from Apr. 2–14, 2022.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN… With five doubles Saturday, the Otters lifted their season total to 71. That mark already ranks No. 14 on the CSUMB single–season list. Drew Williams leads the team with 11 doubles.

BREAKING THE ICE, TRIPLES EDITION… Brady Miguel's triple in Game 1 Saturday at Cal State East Bay was the first by an Otter this season.

FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED… Nate Rohlicek threw CSUMB's second complete game of 2023 in the 7–1, Game 2 win Saturday at Cal State East Bay. Mitchell Torres earned the other one in a win over San Francisco State on Mar. 5.

BACK WHERE THEY BELONG… The defending CCAA champion Otters will end the day back in first place for the first time since Feb. 26.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: JJ Engman (6), Cole Murchison (4). TRIPLES: Brady Miguel (1). HOME RUNS: Robbie Treto (5).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Brady Miguel (9), Kyle Guerra (9), Cole Murchison (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series at Cal State East Bay with a single game Sunday starting at noon.

GO OTTERS!
