Late Rally Comes Up Just Short as Otters Fall 8-7 to Biola

Shelby Fortune nets five second half goals in hard fought effort

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Otter Water Polo continued their WWPA schedule with a tilt against the Biola Eagles, falling by a narrow 8-7 scoreline Saturday at the Otter Tank.

The Otters fell behind 6-1 in the early going, but were able to score the final five goals of the match to draw within one, eventually falling 8-7. Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) was responsible for all five of those final unanswered goals for the Otters, as the sophomore again provided an offensive spark for her team. Haley Alexander (Palos Verdes HS) and Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) both added a pair of assists in the contest.

Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) again played all 32 minutes in goal, making eight saves, and shutting out the Eagles in the fourth quarter, allowing the Otters to claw back late.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Eagle maintained possession for the final 20 seconds without turning the ball over to secure the one goal victory.

ONE WOMAN WRECKING CREW… Shelby Fortune did everything in her power to get the Otters back into the contest after falling behind 6-1 at the half. Shelby scored all five of her goals in the final 10:48 of the game, and also provided stout defense, coming up with a pair of steals. She now has scored 53 career goals, good for 20th all-time in program history.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES… The Otters were outscored 6-1 in half one before outscoring the Eagles 6-2 in the second half. The Otters offense and defense fired on all cylinders in the second half, led by goalkeeper Megan Taylor, who surrendered just two second half goals, and shut the Eagles out in the fourth quarter, allowing the Otters to cut the deficit to one goal.

TOO CLOSE TO CALL… This was just the third ever meeting between the Otters and Eagles, with all three contests decided by one goal.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will hit the road for their first WWPA action away from the Otter Tank, as they get set to take on Cal State East Bay. First sprint is set for 1:00 P.M. on Saturday, Mar. 25 in Hayward.
