Otters Drop Close Game At East Bay

Pioneers pull away in second half for 14-9 win

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay stayed tight, but Cal State East Bay had enough to pull away in the final period to earn a 14–9 win Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Pool.

Sophomore Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) recorded her third consecutive hat trick and her sixth in 14 appearances this season to lead the Otter offense. Freshman attacker Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) added a pair of scores.

East Bay threatened to pull away midway through the second quarter, but back-to-back goals by Fortune and Day and a late power play goal from Hailey Alexander (Rancho Palos Verdes/Palos Verdes HS) tied the game at 6-6 with 31 seconds to play in the first half. The Pioneers claimed the next three scores before Fortune and Day responded again and a late Shea Tully (Yucaipa HS) goal pulled the Otters to within 10–9 after three.

East Bay locked down over the final eight minutes, however, out-scoring CSUMB 3-0, to put the game away.

"Our Otters played really tough today. We had a great push in the second and third quarters. Unfortunately our shots just weren't falling in the fourth," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We are grateful to be back in the Otter Tank on Tuesday."

In addition to Fortune and Day, Gabri Vincze (Agoura HS) scored a goal with two assists and five steals while Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix Charter HS) scored and drew three exclusions.

The Otters jump right back into the pool Tuesday evening when they host UC Merced in the Otter Tank for a nonconference match. First sprint is scheduled for 6 p.m.
