Plate Discipline On Display As Otters Rout Sonoma State 13-3

Otters ride 13 hits and 12 walks to victory over Seawolves

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Coming off of a tough road series at Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters picked up a statement win back at home, defeating Sonoma State 13-3 on Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Otter batters found themselves on base 26 times and were able to cash in 13 of those base runners en route to the victory. Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) led the offensive onslaught for the Otters, notching three hits and three RBI in the contest. Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) and Robbie Treto (Arleta/Pierce College) also notched three-hit ball games, while JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) joined Guerra with three RBI.

Ryan Platero (Hollister/MPC) moved to 2-0 on the season, surrendering three runs on three hits, while fanning seven. The trio of Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College), Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) and Tim Rhyan (Sacramento City College) slammed the door shut on any Seawolves comeback attempt, tossing a combined three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit between them.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… JJ Engman drove in two to push the Otters lead to 11-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

CHASING THE ACE… The Otter offense forced Sonoma State's starting pitcher out of the game after just an inning and a third of work. JJ Engman got the scoring started with an RBI single with two away in the first. The Otters would tack on one more run in the first, as Drew Williams scored on a wild pitch. The Otter would then load the bases in the second for Williams, who would promptly mash a two RBI single to push the Otters ahead 4-1 early and force an early Seawolves call to the bullpen.

AN EIGHT SPOT… Midway through the seventh inning, the Seawolves battled back to make it a 5-3 ball game. The life returned to the Otter bats, however, in the bottom of the seventh, as the Otters scored eight runs, with Chase Lindemann, Kyle Guerra and JJ Engman all driving in two in the inning. This was the most runs in an inning for the Otters since they put up nine in the top of the sixth in a 15-6 win over Stanislaus earlier this year.

BULLPEN BRILLIANCE… Chris Tonna, Michael Potter and Tim Rhyan were the three arms that the Otters chose to toss in relief of Ryan Platero today, and all three did exactly what was asked of them. Tonna worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning, fanning two. Potter loaded the bases, but was able to work out of danger unscathed. Rhyan slammed the door shut with a 1-2-3 ninth.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Seawolves will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 12 P.M. Game one is slated for nine innings, while game two is slated for seven.
