Otters Show Off Pitching Strength in Doubleheader Split with Cal Poly Pomona

CSUMB limits Broncos to five runs in split 18-3, 2-1 (8 Inn.)

POMONA, CALIF. –
CSUMB Baseball again showed off its pitching strength, limiting an explosive Cal Poly Pomona lineup to five runs over 17 innings, earning the split 18-3 and 2-1 Sunday at Scolinos Field.

After taking a 3-2 lead through five innings, the Otters offense uncorked for seven run innings in the sixth and seventh to eventually earn the 15 run victory. Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS), Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) and Dominic Felice (Hollister/MPC) all logged three hit ball games, while JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) blasted a grand slam to dead center as part of a five RBI day. Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) earned his third win of the season out of the pen, working three scoreless innings and surrendering just one hit.

Nate Rohlicek (Gilbert, Ariz./UNR) earned the start in the seven inning game two, and put together the best outing of his young Otter career. Through five innings, Rohlicek had surrendered just two hits, as the Otters found themselves ahead 1-0 on a Brady Miguel double that scored Zach Meddings (Elk Grove/Delta College). The Broncos would respond with a solo shot in sixth to tie things up before plating the winning run on an error in the eighth.

GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… Robbie Treto launched a two run blast to push the Otters ahead 12-2 in the seventh.

GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… The Broncos plated the winning run in the eighth on an Otter error.

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION… After being limited to just two runs yesterday, the Otters put a season high 18 on the scoreboard in game one of today's doubleheader. The Otters also logged a season best 19 hits and 11 extra base hits in the victory.

WELCOME BACK, JJ… JJ Engman returned from injury this weekend, and added another solid bat to the Otter lineup. Engman tallied three hits on the weekend, none bigger than his no-doubt grand slam in the seventh inning of game one today. It was Engman's second home run as an Otter, both of which have come against Cal Poly Pomona.

ROHLICEK ROLLING… Nate Rohlicek put together his best performance on the mound this season. Rohlicek surrendered just two hits through the first five frames, after not tossing more than 4.1 innings in his first four Otter starts. He exited the game ahead 1-0, but was tagged with the no decision as the Otters fell 2-1 in extras.

THE FINAL WORD… "It was a hard fought series against a really good ball club. Despite the series loss, I'm encouraged by the way we competed. Road series in the CCAA are typically decided on the margins, meaning one play, one pitch, or one bounce of the baseball can determine the result. The losses in game 1 and game 4, the margins were not kind to us. We are excited to get back home and compete against a formidable SSU ball club next weekend." – Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome Sonoma State to Seaside for a four game CCAA clash. First pitch of the series is set for 3 PM on Friday, Mar. 17.
