Second Half Surge Falls Short for Otters at San Bernardino

Five Otters score in double figures, but CSUMB falls to CSUSB 80-68

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. – The Otters trimmed a 17 point deficit to as close as six, but it was the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino who found themselves on top in 80-68 victory at The Den on Thursday evening.

Monterey Bay found themselves trailing 44-27 with 8:34 to go in the third quarter, but found their rhythm to the tune of a 17-10 run to close out the period. The Otters kept the pedal to the metal in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 67-61 with 3:34 left in regulation, but that was as close as they would get, as the Coyotes were able to hold off CSUMB in the waning minutes.

Five different Otters scored in double-digits, led by Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) with 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/UC Merced) chipped in 13 points and seven assists, playing every minute of the contest. Jordan Beaumont (San Mateo/Aragon HS), Samiya Terry (Long Beach/Wilson HS) and Amelia Smith (Los Banos/Merced College) all also joined the double figure scoring frenzy with 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Cal State San Bernardino knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the score to 74-62 with 1:11 to go.

FIVE IN DOUBLE FIGURES… Five different Otters scored in double figures in tonight's contest. This marks the first time that the Otters have logged five double-digit scorers this season, with the previous high being four against Holy Names on Nov. 12. The last time the Otters had five double-digit scorers was back on Feb. 16, 2019 in a 74-55 victory over San Francisco State.

STRONG ON THE GLASS… The Otters won the rebounding battle tonight 37-36 and the offensive rebounding 19-10. Shaw led the way with nine, while Terry added six. The 19 offensive rebounds were the second most this season for the Otters, behind only their 21 against Holy Names on Nov. 12.

EVERY MINUTE MABIE… Mikayla Mabie played all 40 minutes on the floor for the Otters tonight. In those 40 minutes, she scored 13 points and seven assists. Mabie is not stranger to playing big minutes, averaging 31.3 minutes played per contest, good for ninth in the CCAA.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sarah Shaw 14; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 9; ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 7; BLOCKS: Sarah Shaw 1; STEALS: Jordan Beaumont 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will continue their roadtrip Saturday when they face Cal Poly Pomona. Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
