Otters Dominate Stanislaus in Conference Opening Doubleheader

Miguel and Hartojo combine for 12 hits and 12 RBI as Otters sweep Warriors 8-0 and 15-6


TURLOCK, CALIF. – Stanislaus State had no answers for the Otters, as Monterey Bay downed the Warriors 8-0 and 15-6 Saturday at Warrior Baseball Field. 

The Otters held the Warriors off the scoreboard for 16 consecutive innings to open up the series, while their offense feasted off of the Warriors pitching staff, tallying 23 runs on 27 hits in the doubleheader. 

Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) and Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS) combined for 12 hits and 12 RBI as the key offensive forces for the Otters.

As stellar as the offense was for the Otters, so too was the pitching, headlined by starters Ryan Platero (Hollister/MPC) and Ryan Sleeman (San Jose/West Valley College). Platero worked six scoreless innings, fanning six, while Sleeman went five scoreless, striking out seven, as both earned their first Ws of the 2023 season. 
 

GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… Brady Miguel drove in his fourth and fifth RBI of the game, pushing the Otters ahead 8-0 in the seventh.   

GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… Nico Hartojo cleared the bases with a double to cap a nine run sixth inning, pushing the Otters ahead 12-0 in the sixth. 

SMALL BALL… 24 of the Otters 27 hits today were singles, as Monterey Bay did an excellent job of extending innings with smooth swings and smart baserunning. 

LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN… After a slow start to the season, Brady Miguel broke out today with seven hits and seven RBI in the doubleheader. Miguel's batting average climbed from .185 to .308 after his stellar day, as he now leads the Otters with 12 hits and 14 RBI for the season. 

MOWING THROUGH THE LINEUP… Game one featured the Otters first shutout since Apr. 3, 2022 when they downed San Marcos 9-0. The Otters also posted zeroes in eight of nine frames in game two, as Platero, Sleeman, Colby Harrison, Tim Rhyan, Michael Potter, Chris Tonna and Nick Bouillerce all saw their ERAs drop with scoreless outings. 

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be back in action in Turlock tomorrow for another doubleheader clash with Stanislaus. First pitch is set for 11 AM.
