Otters Fall to #19 SJSU, Come Up Just Short in Thriller with Santa Clara to Cap Bronco Invitational

Otters drop rematches with San Jose State 18-1 and Santa Clara 12-8

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. –
The Bronco Invitational came to an end on Sunday, with the Otters falling to a pair of familiar foes, the 19th ranked San Jose State Spartans 18-1 and the host Santa Clara Broncos 12-8 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center on the campus of Santa Clara University.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Otters took on one of the top teams in the region, the San Jose State Spartans. Monterey Bay continued to grind it out with San Jose, drawing nine exclusions and committing just three, but were only able to muster up one goal.

Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) netted the lone goal against the Spartans on an assist from Hailey Alexander (Palos Verdes HS). It was Ainsworth's 12th goal of the season, good for second on the Otters, while Alexander's assist was her eighth, good for third.

Game two proved to be one of the matches of the tournament, with the host Broncos facing off with your Otters for the second time this season. The Otters trailed by just two goals heading into the fourth quarter, but would eventually fall by a tally of 12-8, as Santa Clara earned the season split with CSUMB.

Seven different Otters scored against Santa Clara, headlined by freshman Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) who netted a pair of goals while also logging an assist. Abigail Summers (Visalia/Golden West HS) picked up her first two assists of the season as another key piece to the Otters offense in this one.

Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) spent a majority of the time in goal throughout the two contests, with Grace Mensing (Cameron Park/Ponderosa HS) coming on in relief in the second half against San Jose State. Taylor tallied 18 saves and a steal in goal, while Mensing added three more saves in her time in net.

The Otters will return to action on March 3-4 for the Claremont Convergence Tournament. Action gets started on Friday, March 4, with CSUMB taking on Whittier College and UC Santa Barbara.
