Otters Take Chico Down to the Wire, Come Up Just Short

Samiya Terry scores a career-high 15 as Otters fall to Chico 56-49

CHICO, CALIF. –
The Otters kept things tight with the Chico State Wildcats, never trailing by more than 13, but eventually fell 56-49 Saturday night at Acker Gymnasium.

This was a back-and-forth contest for most of the first half. The Wildcats took the upper hand early in the second half, but the Otters battled back to keep things close, cutting the deficit to as close as four points in the fourth quarter. The final margin of victory of just seven points for Chico was indicative of just how tight this contest was.

Samiya Terry (Long Beach/Wilson HS) put together a career-high night of 15 points on 7-10 shooting. Amelia Smith (Los Banos/Merced College) joined Terry in double figures with 12 points to go along with five rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Chico State knocked down a free throw to extend their lead to 56-47 with 23 seconds left.

CAREER NIGHT FOR TERRY… Samiya Terry has been a model of consistency for the Otters all season in the post scoring role, and tonight was able to score a career-best 15 points. Terry has scored at least nine points in each of her last four games. Her seven made field goals were also a career best.

FORCING MISTAKES… The Otters were able to keep this one so close due in big part to their ability to force turnovers, as the Wildcats coughed up the basketball 20 times. On top of her stellar offensive performance, Samiya Terry was also the leader on the floor defensively for CSUMB, coming up with three steals.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Samiya Terry 15; REBOUNDS: Mikayla Mabie 6; ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 4; Blocks: None; Steals: Samiya Terry 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the Kelp Bed to take on Cal State East Bay Thursday (Feb. 23).  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
