Otters Defense Shows Improvement in Day Two of Aggie Invitational

Megan Taylor makes 19 saves as Otters fall to La Verne 9-7 and #19 San Jose State 16-1

DAVIS, CALIF. –
Cal State Monterey Bay Water Polo wrapped up day two of the Aggie Invitational, falling to La Verne 9-7 and 19th ranked San Jose State 16-1 on Sunday at the Schaal Aquatic Center.

Game one was a thriller between the Leopards and Otters.  La Verne started out on the offensive, netting the first four goals. Hailey Alexander (Palos Verdes HS) led the Otters to a response, scoring a pair of goals to cut the deficit to two heading into the halftime break. The teams traded blows in the second half, but the biggest Otter goal came from freshman Ximena Pichon (Fresno/Clovis North HS), who brought Monterey Bay within one goal with two minutes to go. That was as close as the Otters would come to tying it up, eventually falling 9-7.

Coming off of her first career multi-goal game yesterday, Alexander finished game one with a hat trick today. Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) added a goal, an assist and four steals while Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) notched her second two-assist game of the season. Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) logged double digit saves for the sixth time this season.

The Otters did everything they could to hang tough with the 19th ranked San Jose State Spartans. Monterey Bay fired off 20 shots against the Spartans, and were able to keep SJSU off the board for long periods of play, but when the dust all settled, it was the Spartans on top 16-1.

The lone Otter goal was scored by Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix HS) and was assisted by Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS). This young duo will likely be connecting for goals for a long time with the Otters, as Eaton is the leading freshman goal scorer, while Vincze leads all Otters with eight assists.

The Otters will return home to the Otter Tank on Feb. 17 to take on the Cal State Northridge Matadors. First sprint is set for 2 PM.
