Big Comeback Not Enough Against Toros

Shaw, Michalik go for 19 each in 81-65 loss

CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay trimmed 21 points off a 25–point deficit before its comeback ran out of steam in an 81–65 loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon in the Torodome.

The Otters got within four point thanks to a Ciarah Michalik (Sonoma/Montgomery HS/Santa Rosa JC) hook shot on their final possession of the third quarter. They out-scored the Toros 25–11 in the period, but that's when their comeback ran out of gas.

CSUMB kept the Toros within striking distance until three missed free throws and four turnovers in the final four minutes allowed Dominguez Hills to ease away.

Michalik and Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) led the Otter offense with 19 points apiece. Shaw added a game–high 11 rebounds for her second double–double in eight games this season.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when the Otters turned the ball over with 1:55 remaining and Dominguez Hills leading 77–65.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… Sarah Shaw's 19–point, 11–rebound effort Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills was the seventh double–double of her career. She is the only Otter to post a double– double since Camille Parker went for 11 and 12 in a 68–59 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 8, 2020, a span of 61 games.

WHAT A STEAL… Junior forward Deyliana Lewis collected a career–high five steals Saturday at Dominguez Hills. She becomes the second Otter this season to record at least five steals in a game. Sha'nece Garrett had six against Simon Freaser University on Nov. 11.

IN A FOUL MOOD… Whistles played a big part in Saturday's final outcome with six players disqualified, three from each team. The teams were whistled for a total of 58 fouls (29 each), the most in an Otter game this season. That total is the most in a regulation game in Otter history and the most since they combined with the University of Mary (N.D.) for 71 fouls in a 95–87 double overtime CSUMB victory on Nov. 15, 2008.

CAN'T CATCH A BREAK… Dominguez Hills turned the table on the Otters Saturday, forcing 30 turnovers that led to 27 fast-break points for the Toros.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Ciarah Michalik/Sarah Shaw 19. REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 11. ASSISTS: Ciarah Michalik 4. BLOCKS: Abbey Hadsell 2. STEALS: Deyliana Lewis 5.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play one final game before Christmas when they host Lincoln University in a nonconference contest on Sunday, Dec. 17. Tip-off will be at 3 p.m. and admission will be free.
