Cold Shooting Allows L.A. To Pull Away

Otters go 2-for-15 from the floor in third quarter of 81-53 loss

LOS ANGELES — An absolutely frigid spell from the field allowed host Cal State L.A. to run away in the second half for an 81–53 women's basketball victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in CSULA's University Gym.

L.A. built an 18–point lead at the intermission, 53–35, when the bottom fell out on any potential comeback after the Otters went 2-for-15 from the floor in the third quarter. In fact, CSUMB was 1-for-19 through the first 15 minutes of the second half before snapping out of its shooting funk. The Otters finished the night shooting 31 percent from the floor (19-for-61), including 23 percent from long range (5-for-22).

Thirteen of the 15 Otters in uniform scored Thursday night. Amelia Smith (Los Banos HS/Merced College) led the balanced effort with eight points. Deyliana Lewis (Stockton/Bear Creek HS/UC Merced) added seven points. Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) pulled down a team–high seven rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when a Lily Buggs layup gave Cal state L.A. a 68–42 lead with 8:24 remaining.

WHEN LAYUPS ARE NOT A LAYUP… Although the Otters had trouble finishing Thursday night, it wasn't for lack of quality opportunities. Thursday's setback featured 15 missed Otter layups.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS… The Otters blocked six more shots Thursday at Cal State L.A. Combined with their eight blocks last Saturday against Cal State East Bay, CSUMB has blocked 14 shots in its last two games. That's the second–highest 2–game total in program history and the most since they blocked 15 in wins at Humboldt State (7) and Sonoma State (8) Jan. 13–15, 2011.

L.A. ON THE REBOUND… Cal State L.A. did a fantastic job on the boards Thursday night, pulling down an opponent season–high 61 rebounds. That's the most by an Otter opponent since Dominican University claimed 68 caroms in a 70–66 Otter win on Nov. 29, 2016.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Amelia Smith 8. REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 7. ASSISTS: Jordan Beaumont/Deyliana Lewis/Amelia Smith 2. BLOCKS: Gabby Kime 2. STEALS: Sha'nece Garrett 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2–game trip to L.A. County when the head to Carson to take on defending CCAA Champions Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday (Dec. 9). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
