Big Comeback Falls Just Short To Close 2023

Career-high 17 from Kiki Roberts not enough in 78-73 loss to Stanislaus

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay dug itself a big early hole then nearly rallied for a miracle victory before closing 2023 with a 78–73 loss to Stanislaus State Sunday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Sophomore forward Kiki Roberts (Fairfield/Vanden HS) came off the bench to score a career–high 17 points in leading CSUMB back from 21 points down to near victory. Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) added 12 points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter.

CSUMB stayed within striking distance throughout the first half until Stanislaus gained a little separation to take a 38–28 lead at intermission. The Warriors came out on fire after the break, however, and threatened to run away with the game by starting the second half on a 13–2 run to take their biggest lead at 51–30.

The Otters responded with a big run of their own, out-scoring Stanislaus 22–8 to close third quarter down just seven, 59–52. They pulled to within four points several times in the fourth quarter and got to within a single possession at 74–71 when Roberts made a spinning layup with 25 seconds to play.

Stanislaus closed the game from the line, however, making four of four free throws in the final 19 seconds to seal the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Mya Blake made a pair of free throws with six seconds left to extend the Stanislaus lead to 78–71.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE… The Otters enjoyed their best afternoon from the free-throw line this season by making 23-of-27. The 23 free throws made and 85.2 percent free-throw percentage both marked season highs. Sarah Shaw led the way with eight free throws in 10 attempts.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kiki Roberts 17; REBOUNDS: Deyliana Lewis 7; ASSISTS: Deyliana Lewis 3; BLOCKS: Deyliana Lewis 2; STEALS: Ledjan Pahukoa 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game homestand by hosting Sonoma State Thursday (Jan. 4). Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. as the opening game of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
