Otters Run Out Of Steam Late Versus Sunbirds

CSUMB forces 23 turnovers in 66-57 defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team spotted visiting Fresno Pacific a big early lead and rallied to pull ahead before falling late, 66–57, in the opening game of the CCAA/PacWest Challenge Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Deyliana Lewis (Stockton/Bear Creak HS) scored 17 points, Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) grabbed 10 rebounds and the Otter defense forced 23 Sunbird turnovers. But the Otters struggled shooting the ball, making just 4-of-17 from long range and just 13-of-22 from the line. Those numbers proved too much to overcome.

CSUMB trailed 23–14 at the end of one quarter before holding Fresno to just seven points in the second while pulling to within 30–29 at halftime. But the Sunbirds opened the second half with a quick 8–1 spurt to regain control and CSUMB spent the rest of the game in catch-up mode.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Maesyn Rix grabbed the rebound of a missed Otter jumper with 1:32 remaining and Fresno holding a 64–52 lead.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otters defense has been on fire early in the season forcing 55 turnovers through the first two games. CSUMB forced 23 more turnovers Friday against Fresno Pacific.

THIEVES IN THE…EVENING… Leading the defensive charge for the Otters Friday were Amelia Smith and Sha'nece Garrett, who claimed three steals apiece.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Deyliana Lewis 17; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 10; ASSISTS: Ciarah Michalik 3; BLOCKS: Deliana Lewis/Sarah Shaw 1; STEALS: Sha'nece Garrett/Amelia Smith 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 6–game, season–opening homestand against Dominican University in Game 3 of the CCAA/PacWest Crossover Saturday in The Kelp Bed. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
