Otters Drop Opener To Simon Fraser, 74-65

Sarah Shaw leads MB with 14 points, 7 rebounds

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team showed flashes of promise Saturday afternoon despite falling to Simon Fraser University 74–65 in The Kelp Bed.

It was CSUMB's season opener but the fifth game of the season for the Red Leafs, and the difference showed around the margins as SFU pulled away late to earn the win.

Junior center Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) enjoyed a strong game, finishing with team highs of 14 points and seven rebounds. Newcomer Ciarah Michalik (Santa Rosa JC/Montgomery HS) looked good in her Otter debut, scoring 13 points to go along with game highs of four assists and four steals.

Senior guard Amelia Smith (Merced College/Los Banos HS) also reached double figures with 12 points.

The game stayed tight throughout, with neither team able to forge more than a 7–point lead through the first three quarters. CSUMB claimed its final lead at 55–54 on an Abbey Hadsell (Folsom HS) 3–pointer with 6:34 remaining.

But, as part of her game-high 27 points, Jessica Wisotzki hit a pair of free throws and a dagger three on the ensuing to Red Leaf possessions and the Otters never took the lead again.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… According to the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Makenna Gardner grabbed the rebound of an Otter miss with 18 seconds remaining and SFU leading 72–65.

FOR OPENERS: With Saturday's 74–65 loss to Simon Fraser, the Otters now are 8–12 in 20 season openers at the NCAA Division II level.

FOR HOME OPENERS: Including Saturday game versus Simon Fraser, the Otters have played just six openers at home in their history and hadn't opened the season at home since taking a 98–70 decision from Dixie State on Nov. 9, 2013. They are now 3–3 all–time when opening in The Kelp Bed.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sarah Shaw 14; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 7; ASSISTS: Ciarah Michalik 4; BLOCKS: Deyliana Lewis 1; STEALS: Ciarah Michalik 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting the CCAA/PacWest Crossover Tournament Nov. 17–18. CSUMB will face Fresno Pacific Friday (Nov. 17) at 3 p.m. and Dominican University Saturday (Nov. 18) at 2 p.m.
