Otters Hold Off Cougars In 5–Setter

Three Otters record double-doubles in road victory

BOX SCORE SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay gave one of it most exciting road performances in recent memory Friday night, handing Cal State San Marcos a 25–20, 19–25, 25–14, 21–25, 15–11 defeat in the CSUSM Sport Center.

Junior Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) and senior Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) were nearly unstoppable on the outside, with Wahl recording 18 kills and Honberger 17. Senior middle blocker Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) had a strong night as well, chipping in 11 kills.

CSUMB won the first six points and never trailed in taking the first set. San Marcos got hot late in Set 2, breaking a 17–17 tie by scoring eight of the final 10 points to even the match.

The third set was all Otters again as they raced to a 10–4 lead and kept the Cougars at arm's length throughout. San Marcos then forced a deciding set when Trinity Barr recorded a kill and a block to thwart a late Otter rally.
As they did in winning sets one and three, the Otter never trailed in the fifth. San Marcos pulled to within one several times, but after getting to 12–11, the Otters put the game on ice.

 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… consecutive kills by Ashley Vanderpan and Jackie Wahl recorded the final two points to seal the win.

OF COURSE IT WENT FIVE… That Friday's CSUMB at Cal State San Marcos match went the full five sets should have surprised nobody. It marked the fifth time in 10 meetings all–time that the teams went the distance to decide a winner.

HONBERGER GETS GRIMM… With three aces in Friday's win at San Marcos, Kaylie Honberger passed Dana Grimm (2007–10) for the No. 6 spot on the Otter career aces list with 99.

HONBERGER PASSES 700 DIG MARK… With 13 digs in Friday's win at San Marcos, Kaylie Honberger became the 14th player in CSUMB history to surpass 700 career digs (710).

TRIPLE DOUBLE–DOUBLE… The Otters had three players record double–doubles in Friday's win at Cal State San Marcos. Ashley Vanderpan recorded her team–leading 13th double–double with 46 assists and 18 digs. Kaylie Honberger posted her ninth with 17 kills and 13 digs. Jackie Wahl used 18 kills and 13 digs for her sixth double–double of 2023.
