WAIKOLA, Hawaii —
The Cal State Monterey Bay women's golf team continued the strong start to its season with its third consecutive second place finish in as many outings Tuesday at the HPU Sharks Shootout on the Waikoloa Beach Resort Course.

It marks just the third time ever and the first since the 2009–10 season that the Otters have finished as high as second in three consecutive, full-field tournaments.

CSUMB recorded the best round of the day Tuesday and the second-best round by any team in the tournament by carding a collective 290 to move up into a tie for second place behind tournament winner Cal State San Marcos. San Marcos finished the 36-hole event at 578. CSUMB, Cal State East Bay and Cal State L.A. all tied for second at 591.

Sonoma State finished fifth at 592, giving the CCAA a sweep of the top five spots in the 18–team field.

Junior Cathy Tong (Newport Harbor HS) led a strong scoring group of Otters Tuesday, all of whom scored between 71 and 74. Tong finished tournament play ninth overall. shooting 75–71 for a 6–over 146 on the par-70 course.

Sophomore Mia Golovich (Murrieta Mesa HS) finished one stroke behind Tong in 11th place. Senior Zoe Offield (Stockton/Tokay HS) just missed a spot in the Top 20, placing 23rd at 11–over.

"The team played really well today to come from as far back as we were at the start of the round to finish tied for second," said CSUMB Head Coach Jim Ragan. "I was really proud of how well they played when they knew they had to in this final round. It was a complete team effort with Cathy, Mia, Zoe, Makena and Madi all contributing to our success. We are looking forward to our next event in a couple of days."

The Otters will conclude their Hawaiian Islands trip at the Dennis Rose Invitational Oct. 27–28 on the Waikoloa Village Course. That will conclude the fall portion of their 2023–24 schedule.
