Volleyball Falls Twice On L.A. Trip

Otters play first place L.A. tough; get swept at Dominguez Hills

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA — The Cal State Monterey bay volleyball team played through a tough weekend in Southern California, a close match to nationally-ranked Cal State L.A. in four Friday before being swept by Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon in Carson.

No. 23 Cal State L.A. rallied after dropping the first set to defeat CSUMB 22–25, 25–13, 25–21, 25–22. Dominugez Hills pulled away late in all three sets to win 25–22, 25–19, 25–18.

Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) put down 15 kills and Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) collected 20 digs to give the Otters hope of an upset at L.A. CSUMB came within a whisker of forcing a fifth set, trailing just 23–22 in the fourth, before the Golden Eagles found the final two points to seal the win.

The Otters simply wore down as the match went on Saturday in the Torodome. They hit a solid .313 in a tight opening set but saw their hitting percentage dip to .171 in the second and .049 in the third as Dominguez Hills completed the sweep.

Wahl, Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Emily Child (El Dorado Hills/Oak Ridge HS) each had seven kills against the Toros.

CSUMB heads north to continue its 4–match roadtrip next weekend. The Otters will look to complete season sweeps against Sonoma State (Oct. 26) and Cal Poly Humboldt (Oct. 28) before returning home to host San Francisco State on Nov. 3.
