Otters Fall In Three At Sonoma

Match turns in deuce second set

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Sonoma State rallied from behind to win a deuce second set, turning the tide in the Seawolves' 25–21, 26–24, 25–18 win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in the Wolves Den.

The Otters used a strong net defense to stay with Sonoma, finishing with 12 team blocks, the No. 3 mark in program history for a 4–set match. Senior middle blocker Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) led the way with a career–high seven blocks. Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS), Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and freshman Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) added four blocks apiece.

Veenendaal led the way on the attack with eight kills. Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) led the back row with nine digs.

CSUMB nearly pulled off a big comeback of its own in the opening set, trimming a 19–10 deficit to just three at 22–19 before the Seawolves were able to hang on for the win. The Otters led all the way in set two until Sonoma overcame multiple 6–point deficits to grab its first lead at 22–21.

The Otters took an early lead in set three before a 10–2 run put Sonoma on top for the first time at 12–8. The Seawolves eased away from there.

CSUMB concludes its 4–match roadtrip Saturday in Arcata at Cal Poly Humboldt. The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their final home matches of the season when they host San Francisco State and Cal State San Bernardino Nov. 3–4.
