Battle of the Bays Goes The Distance

East Bay rallies from 2–1 down to win in five

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Battle of the Bays, volleyball edition, truly was a battle Saturday night as visiting Cal State East Bay rallied to take a 5–set victory from Cal State Monterey Bay in The Kelp Bed. The sets scores were 25–23, 23–25, 20–25, 25–21, 15–13.

Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) matched her career high with 20 kills to lead all attackers. Jackie Wahl (Palm Desert HS) added her own career–highs, finishing with 18 kills and 20 digs. Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS) passed 44 assists and added a career–high 29 digs.

The match was every bit as close as the sets scores indicated. East Bay rallied from a 22–19 deficit to take the first set before the Otters came back from 22–20 down to win the second. The third and forth sets were relatively comfortable victories for the respective sides, although the Otters did rally back  from seven points down to make it 22–21 before the Pioneers held on.

CSUMB led 11–9 in the fifth when East Bay ran off four consecutive points to go up 13–11. Kills by Vanderpan and Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) brought the set to deuce before consecutive Pioneer kills gave East Bay the win.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Consecutive kills by Fane Paua and Megan Crecelius broke a 13–13 tie in the fifth set.

OTTERS REACH THE CENTURY CLUB… The Otters collected 104 digs Saturday versus Cal State East Bay, reaching 100 digs for the 12 time in program history. The 104 digs rank No. 8 in the CSUMB record book.

TAKING THEIR SWINGS… The Otters took 214 swings Saturday against Cal State East Bay, a mark that ties for No. 6 on the CSUMB list for attack attempts in the match. The last time the Otters took as many as 200 swings in a match came on Oct. 26, 2018 when they made 202 attempts in a 5–setter at Cal State East Bay.

HONBERGER MOVES UP TO No. 7 ON KILLS LIST… With 20 kills Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Kaylie Honberger moved up to No. 7 on the Otter career kills list, tying Christine Ricketts (2004–07) at 768. She needs seven more to pass CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi for No. 6 on the Otter career kills list.

HONBERGER MAKES HER POINT(S)… With 20.5 points Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Kaylie Honberger passed CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi for the No. 8 spot on the Otter career points list with 897. With eight matches remaining in the season, she is right on pace to became the sixth player in Otter history to reach 1,000 career points.

THE VANDERPAN 1,000… With 44 assists Saturday against Cal State East Bay, Ashley Vanderpan became the eighth player in Otter history to reach 1,000 career assists (1,025). She joins Erica Chapa (2017–18) as the only Otter setters to record 1,000 assists in less than three seasons.
