Defense Keeps Otters Close in Loss to Humboldt

Otters force 21 turnovers, fall 64-48

SEASIDE, CALIF. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team defense continued to shine, forcing Cal Poly Humboldt to commit 21 turnovers, but it wasn't enough as the Otters fell 64–48 at the Kelp Bed Friday night.  

CSUMB stifled an extremely potent Humboldt attack for most of three quarters, taking a 40–38 lead into the fourth. The Lumberjacks made the adjustments they needed, however, regaining the lead and momentum in the fourth quarter en route to the victory.  

Amelia Smith (Los Banos/Merced College) led the offensive and defensive charges for the Otters this evening witheight points and eight rebounds. She also passed three assists and clogging passing lanes all game, coming up with two steals and numerous deflections. 

 

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jayci Bayne made a corner triple to give Humboldt a 13-point lead with a 1:21 to go in the game. 

FOR THE FIRST TIME… Amelia Smith became the first Otter this season to lead the team in all five major statistical categories. Smith tallied eight points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, all team highs.  

A NEW FACE… Gabby Kime made her collegiate debut for the Otters Friday night. In 13 minutes of play off the bench, the 6–4 freshman transfer from Cal Poly SLO by way of Del Oro High School logged three points with a rebound and an assist.  

TERRIFIC THIRD… The Otters played their best defensive quarter of the season, holding the Lumberjacks to five points in the third quarter. CSUMB took the lead in the third due to its stellar defense, but couldn't hold it through the final frame.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their homestand by hosting Sonoma State Saturday. The women will tip-off at 5 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
