Mabie’s Big Game Not Enough As Otters Fall to Sonoma

Mikayla Mabie leads Otters in points, rebounds and assists

SEASIDE, CALIF.Just 24 hours after Amelia Smith (Los Banos/Merced College) accomplished the feat, Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/UC Merced) became the second Otter this season to lead her team in points, rebounds and assists in a single game, but it was not enough to stop Sonoma State from taking a 58–48 decision Saturday evening inside the Kelp Bed.

Mabie made numerous clutch plays down the stretch, as the Otters turned a 21–point deficit in the third quarter into an eight point deficit in the fourth. But they couldn't quite clear the final hurdle as the Seawolves were able to slow the game down just enough to hang onto the victory.

Behind Mabie, Gabby Kime (Loomis/Cal Poly SLO), Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS), and Samiya Terry (Long Beach/Wilson HS) all added eight points, with Kime chipping in five boards.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Sarah Shaw was unable to convert a contested layup with 25 seconds to go.

FOR THE SECOND TIME… Mikayla Mabie joined Amelia Smith as the second Otter to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists in the same game. Mabie scored 12 points, reeled in six rebounds, and assisted on three baskets.

KIME SHINES… Newcomer Gabby Kime had a stellar game off the bench in just her second contest as an Otter Saturday versus Sonoma State. Kime tallied eight points, second only to Mabie, and brought down five rebounds in 16 minutes.

FREE THROW FRENZY… The Otters made 20+ trips to the free throw line for the third consecutive game Saturday versus Sonoma State, converting on 18 of 25 attempts. CSUMB began the night just 5-of-11 from the stripe, but righted the ship, connecting on 13 of its final 14 attempts.

LATE GAME MAGIC… At the 1:17 mark of the third quarter, the Otters found themselves trailing the Seawolves 49–28. Not deterred by the large deficit, Monterey Bay went on a 14–3 run over the next six minutes to cut the deficit to eight and once again make things exciting down the stretch.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mikayla Mabie 12. REBOUNDS: Mikayla Mabie 6. ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 3. BLOCKS: Kiki Griffin/Samiya Terry 1. STEALS: Kiki Griffin 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will hit the road for a 2-game trip, starting Thursday Jan. 12) when they take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
