Early Onslaught Pushes Otters to Home Opening Victory

Nine Otters score in 11-10 victory over Santa Clara

SEASIDE, CALIF. – Cal State Monterey Bay returned to the Otter Tank in winning form, downing Santa Clara 11–10 Saturday afternoon in its 2023 home opener.

Defending WWPA Player of the Week Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) continued her strong start to the season, notching a hat trick for her third consecutive multi-goal contest. Also in top form was goalkeeper Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) who recorded 15 saves and three steals.

Charged by a sizable crowd, the Otters started the match on the right foot, scoring six goals in the first quarter and taking a 6–3 lead heading into the second. They extended their lead to five goals, 9–4 by halftime.

Santa Clara responded by shutting out the Otters in third quarter to pull within a goal at 9–8. But fourth quarter goals by
Autumn Day (Murrieta Valley HS) and Fortune helped CSUMB regain a 2–goal lead. The Otters than killed the final 21 second after a late pulled the Broncos back to within one.

Nine different Otters found the back of the net. The last time the Otters had nine different players score in a match against Mercyhurst on Apr. 23, 2022.

"This game was a true team effort; that can be seen easily through the 9 different goal scorers," noted Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Defensively, our zone was really mobile and adjusted through each possession to set Megan up well for blocking shots. It's really fun to go into a game with a plan and then execute it well."

The Otters will continue their homestand on Feb. 4 when they take on Azusa Pacific. First sprint is set for 2 p.m.
