Otters Battle Back To Take Toros In Five

Otters dig out of an 0-2 hole to even their record at 7-7

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay overcame a torrid Toro start for a thrilling 14–25, 21–25, 25–17, 25–22, 15–12 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters evened their overall record at 7–7 and improved to 3–4 in CCAA play with the victory. Dominguez Hills fell to 3–11 and 1–6.

Senior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led three Otters in double figures with a match–high 17 kills. Redshirt freshman Madison Tamayo (Visalia/Redwood HS) took the star turn, however, coming off the bench to record a career–high 14 kills in the most extended playing time of her young career.

Tamayo put down kills on six of her first 10 swings as the Otters stole momentum back in a dominant third set. She and Reeves combined for 16 kills in the final two sets.

Dominguez Hills raced to big early leads in the first two sets, but the Otters began to turn the tide at the end of the second. Although the Toros held on for the win, the Otters made them play four set points to sap some of the Dominguez Hills momentum.

CSUMB pulled away midway through the third set to extended the match before a pair of Reeves kills sandwiched a Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows HS) ace to snap a 22–22 tie in the fourth.

The Otters never trailed in the fifth, but the Toros caught them at 10 and again at 12 before two Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) kills and the coup des grace from Tamayo ended the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Madison Tamayo put down her 14th kill in transition for match point.

GOING THE DISTANCE… The Otters used the full five sets for the third time this season, improving to 2–1 in those matches. The Otters have won five consecutive 5–set matches in The Kelp Bed and are 6–2 in 5–setters under Courtney Materazzi.

ON THE BLOCKS… The Otters combined for 11.0 total blocks in Friday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills. That mark ranks No. 8 on the all–time list for blocks in a 5–set match. They were just two shy of the school record 13.0 blocks against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 24, 2011.

SEASON–HIGH FOR REEVES… The 17 kills put down by Lauren Reeves in Friday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills were a season high. Her career high of 20 kills came last season against Chico State (Oct. 22).
