This Time Otters Can’t Overcome Slow Start

Cal State L.A. wins 25-17, 25-19, 25-20

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a slow start for the second consecutive match Saturday against visiting Cal State L.A. This time, the Otters couldn't pull off the comeback as L.A. took a 25–17, 25–19, 25–20 decision in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB dipped to 7–8 overall and 3–5 in the CCAA. L.A. improved to 12–4 and 7–1 to pull to within a half game of conference–leading Cal Poly Pomona.

The Otters simply couldn't find a rhythm early and didn't record their first kill in the 18th rally. They found their footing from that point, but the Golden Eagles picked up their game as well to inhibit any thoughts of an Otter comeback.

Freshman outside hitter Madison Tamayo (Visalia/Redwood HS) made her first collegiate start and finished her breakout weekend with a team–leading 10 kills. Senior libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) served a match–high three aces and added a team–high nine digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A pair of Otter errors broke a 19–19 tie in the third set. CSUMB never got closer than two points the rest of the way.

THE VANDERPAN 400… Ashley Vanderpan became the 20th player in Otter history to record 400 assists in a season with 22 helpers Saturday against Cal State L.A. She now has 417 in 2022. She needs five assists to pass Kelsey Johnston (421 in 2014) for No. 19 on the Otter single–season list.

NOLTE IN THE TOP 25… Mikayla Nolte added a pair of blocks to her total Saturday against Cal State L.A. to catch Mollin Helfrich (2019), Samantha Brennan (2017) and Tiffaney Riggs (2011) for No. 25 on the Otter single–season blocks list. She needs four more blocks to move into the Top 20.

THE CENTURY CLUB… The Otters served eight aces Saturday against Cal State L.A., giving them an even 100 for the season. It marks the 20th time in program history they have hit the century mark from the service line.

DOUBLE–DIGIT DIGS STREAK ENDS… By finishing with a team–high nine digs Saturday versus Cal State L.A., Sam Chavez saw her streak of matches with double–digit digs end at seven. She has recorded 10 or more digs in 13 of 15 matches this season and is averaging 14.9 digs per match.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Madison Tamayo 10.0; KILLS: Madison Tamayo 10; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich/Mikayla Nolte/Ashley Vanderpan 2; ACES: Sam Chavez 3; DIGS: Sam Chavez 9.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The midpoint of the conference schedule means it's travel partner week in the CCAA. The Otters will play at San Francisco State Thursday (Oct. 6) before hosting the Gators Saturday (Oct. 8). First serve both nights will be at 5 p.m.
