SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a tough 4–setter to San Francisco State, falling 25–22, 23–25, 25–18, 25–23 Thursday evening in The Swamp on the SFSU campus.

Outside hitter Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led CSUMB with 14 kills. She added personal season highs of 10 digs and five blocks. Middle blocker Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) matched the team season high with seven blocks while senior libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) anchored the backline defense with 18 digs.

None of that was enough to offset the strong match of Gator freshman opposite Tamiya Wilson, who put down an Otter opponent season high 25 kills to lead all attackers.

CSUMB was in strong position win the opening set when a Helfrich kill gave the Otters a 21–20 lead. But the Gators rallied to score five of the next six points to pull it out of the fire.

The Otters never trailed in the second set, but SFSU hung around and pulled to within 24–23 before a Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) kill evened the match at a set apiece.

The Gators turned the tables in the third, gaining separation midway through the frame and holding the Otters at arm's length for the duration. CSUMB had a swing to send the match to a fifth set, but an SFSU block saved the only match point the Gators would need.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… San Francisco State's Katelyn Sonnier and Chloe Henning combined for a block at 24–23 in the fourth set.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… With starting setter Ashley Vanderpan out sick, freshman setter Rilee Read saw her first collegiate action Thursday at San Francisco State and passed 31 assists. That's the fifth most assists by an Otter this season, regardless of match length.

ON THE BLOCKS, PART I… Sophomore middle Mikayla Nolte added seven blocks to her account Thursday for the second consecutive match. She is the first Otter to post as many as seven blocks in consecutive matches in Otter history.

ON THE BLOCKS, PART II… Senior middle Mollin Helfrich also posted a career–high seven block assists Thursday at S.F. State.
