Slow Start Hamstrings Otters In Loss To Sonoma

Mikayla Nolte ties CSUMB Division II record with four solo blocks

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay started slowly and visiting Sonoma State took full advantage to earn a 25–14, 25–22, 25–22 win Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) led the Otters with eight kills while sophomore middle blocker Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) put down six blocks, including four solos. Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the back row defense with 15 digs.

The Otter offense struggled to find a rhythm all match while Sonoma found a groove early. The Seawolves hit .444 to win the opening set going away before holding off the Otters to take tighter contests in the second and third sets.

CSUMB held a late lead in the second frame before Sonoma scored seven of the final nine points to pull it out of the fire. The Seawolves then staved off a late Otter rally to take set three and the match.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Seawolf middle blocker Jessie Hobbs squashed big Otter rally with a kill on match point.

NOLTE ON THE BLOCK… Sophomore middle blocker Mikayla Nolte put down four solo blocks Saturday versus Sonoma State. That matches most ever by an Otter in an NCAA Division II match and the fourth most in Otter history. She is the first to do it since Janai Johnson had four against Cal State Stanislaus on Oct. 6, 2012.

ANOTHER NOLTE NOTE… With her four block solos Saturday against Sonoma State, Mikayla Nolte joins Janai Johnson and Christine Rickets (vs. Cal State L.A. in 2007) as the only Otters to accomplish that feat against NCAA Division II competition.

VANDERPAN BREAKS INTO THE TOP 25… Even though there are still 14 regular season matches to be played, Ashley Vanderpan already has reached the CSUMB Top 25 for assists in a season. She ended the weekend with 347 assists, putting her at No. 21. She needs just three more assists to pass Danielle Zimmerman (349 in 2005) for a spot in the Top 20.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Savanna Maker 8.5; KILLS: Savanna Maker 8; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 5; ACES: Sam Chavez/Lauren Reeves/Jackie Wahl 1; DIGS: Sam Chavez 15.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday (Sept. 30). First serve in The Kelp Bed is scheduled for 5 p.m.
