Otters Enjoy Some Home Cooking, Sweep Humboldt

CSUMB commits just six errors in a 25-19, 25-15, 25-16 win


SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team jumped back into the win column with some good old fashioned home cooking, sweeping Cal Poly Humboldt 25–19, 25–15, 25–16 Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB imporved to 3–1 at home and evened its record at 6–6 (2–3 CCAA). Cal Poly fell to 1–7 and 0–5.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led a balanced Otter attack with nine kills. Sophomores Mollin Helfrich (Salesian Prep) and Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) added eight kills apiece. Setters Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS/San Diego State) and Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) combined for assists on 29 of CSUMB's 38 kills.

Humboldt forged some early momentum by building an 11–6 lead in the opening set. It was pretty much all CSUMB from there, however, as the Otters used a 7–2 run to tie the set and another 11–3 run to win it going away.

The Lumberjacks rallied to tie the second set at 13–13 before another strong finishing run — this time of the 12–2 variety — gave CSUMB complete control. The final frame proved to be more of the same as the Otters had little trouble closing out the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Lauren Reeves served six consecutive points to give the Otters a 10–6 lead in the third set. Humboldt never got closer than two points the rest of the way.

THEY'RE A HIT… The Otters hit .292 as a team in Friday sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt. They improved to 3–0 in 2022 and 10–0 overall in one–plus seasons under Courtney Materazzi when hitting .250 or better in a match.

TO ERR IS HUMAN…BUT NOT OTTER… The Otters committed a season–low six attack errors in Friday's sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt. They represent the third fewest errors the Otters ever have committed in a match and the fewest since making four in a sweep of Sonoma State on Oct. 30, 2021. In case you're wondering (and we know that you are), the Otter record for the fewest errors in a match is two set in a sweep of Holy Names University on Sept. 9, 2017.

HELFRICH MOVES INTO THE TOP 25… With eight kills in Friday's sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt, Mollin Helfrich jumped to No. 24 on the Otter career kills list with 345. Next up is Kimberly Sordello at No. 23 with 354 kills.

LUCKY NUMBER 13… With a match–high 19 digs in Friday's sweep of Cal Poly Humboldt, Sam Chavez moved up to the No. 13 spot on the Otter career digs list with 649. Next up on the list is her coach — Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi — who holds the No. 12 spot with 806.
