CSUMB Opens Season With Sweep Of Urban Knights

Otters close Day 1 of Otter Classic with 25-16, 25-21, 26-16 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team opened its 2022 campaign in style with a 25–16, 25–21, 25–16 sweep of Pac West Conference foe Academy of Art Friday night to close Day 1 of the Otter Classic in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 10 kills each from seniors Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) and Mollin Helfrich (Salesian Prep). Senior Ashley Vanderpan (Elk Grove HS), a transfer from San Diego State, chipped in 30 assists, two aces and a team–leading four blocks.

ArtU, playing its second match of the day, stayed close early in all three sets, but couldn't get over the hump as the midway point approached each time. The Urban Knights pulled to within 9–8 in the second set and came all the way back to tie the third set at 17–all, but never managed to capture the lead.

Sophomore Savanna Maker (Salinas HS), making her first appearance for her hometown team after transferring from the University of Nevada, contributed five kills, two blocks and a match–high three aces to the Otter victory. Senior libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) passed a match–high 11 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Consecutive kills by Mollin Helfrich and Jackie Wahl, followed by a Savanna Maker ace, turned a slim 20–19 lead in the third set into a 23–19 advantage that iced the win.

FOR OPENERS… The Otters improved to 13–12 in season openers (1–1 under Head Coach Courtney Materazzi) with Friday's sweep of Academy of Art. The Otters are now 10–15 in home openers dating back to their inaugural season in 1996.

ART LOVERS… Friday's sweep of the Urban Knights brought CSUMB's all–time record versus Academy of Art to 7–2. It was CSUMB's fifth consecutive win over Art dating back to 2016.

MOVIN' ON UP… With 10 kills Friday night, Kaylie Honberger passed Tiffany Riggs (2008–11) for the No. 21 spot on the Otter career kills list with 370. She should pass Lauren Shacklock (371) and Alisha Thomas (373) to move into 19th place Saturday.

MAKING HER POINT… Kaylie Honberger also moved up to No. 23 on the Otter career points list. Her 12.0 points Friday give her 440.0 for her career, helping her slip past Samantha Brennan (430.5) and Alisha Thomas (435.5).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 12.0; KILLS: Mollin Helfrich/Kaylie Honberger 10; BLOCKS: Ashley Vanderpan 4; ACES: Savanna Maker 3; DIGS: Sam Chavez 11.

THE LAST WORD… "I loved our dedication to pushing through and creating momentum. It's a solid start to the season. Every player owned their responsibilities and pushed through each set. While everyone really showed up, a big shoutout to Chav (Samantha Chavez) for keeping the focus and communication in motion all match." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB concludes play at the Otter Classic with a pair of matches Saturday. They kick things off by battling No. 23 Michigan Tech at 2:30 p.m. The Otters will close tournament action against Pac West Conference rival Dominican University at 7:30 p.m.
