Volleyball Finishes Strong At Otter Classic With Sweep Of Dominican

Sam Chavez, Savanna Maker named to all-tournament team

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey finished a strong opening weekend at the Otter Classic volleyball tournament with a 25–15, 25–13, 25–10 sweep of Pac West Conference rival Dominican University Saturday night in The Kelp Bed. The Otters began the day with a strong effort that came up just short in a 26–24, 25–20, 25-22 loss to No. 23 Michigan Tech.

The Otters finished play at the tournament with a 2–1 record that included a season–opening sweep of Academy of Art Friday night.

Libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) and opposite Savanna Maker (Salinas HS/Univ. of Nevada) earned spots on the all–tournament team for their efforts. Chavez averaged 4.4 digs per set and tallied double–digit digs in all three matches. Maker hit .429 over the weekend and led the frontline defense with 12 blocks.

The Otters appeared poised for the upset against Michigan Tech in their first match Saturday. They led virtually the entire first set and held a 24–21 lead before the Huskies rallied to score the final five points to pull out the win.
CSUMB led as late as 19–17 in the second set and 20–19 in the third before Michigan Tech rallied two more times to secure the match win.

There was considerably less drama in the win over Dominican as CSUMB never trailed at any point in the match. In fact, so complete was Otter control that the only time any set was tied was at 5–5 in the first, .

THE MICHIGAN TECH MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Huskies rallied to score five unanswered points after trailing 20–19 in the third set.

THE DOMINICAN MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a pair of Kaylie Honberger services aces sparked a 5–point run that broke a 5–5 tie in the first set. The Penguins never drew even with the Otters for the balance of the match.

ALL–TOURNAMENT TIME… Including Otter standouts Sam Chavez and Savanna Maker, eight players earned spots on the Otter Classic All–Tournament Team. The rest of the team included Lina Espejo–Ramirez, Jillian Kuizenga and Carissa Beyer of Michigan Tech; Samantha Campion and Madison Novak of Cal Poly Pomona; and Camila Sanchez–Tellez of Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kuizenga was named tournament MVP.

OTTERS AT YOUR SERVICE… The Otters just missed matching their program record for aces in a 3–set match by finishing with 13 in Saturday's win over Dominican University. The CSUMB record is 14 aces set against Dominican in 2004 and again against Cal State Stanislaus in 2009. The record for aces in all matches is 15 in a 4–set win over Chico State last season.

VANDERPAN AT YOUR SERVICE… Setter Ashley Vanderpan just missed tying the individual record for aces in a 3–set match, finishing with five in the win over Dominican. The Otter record is six, set four times previously, last by Sophia Torres in a win over Sonoma State last season.

NOLTE ON THE BLOCKS… Sophomore middle blocker Mikayla Nolte had a nice coming out party in the win over Dominican with a career and match–high seven total blocks. That mark ranks No. 5 on the Otter list for blocks in a 3–set match.

HITTING THE RIGHT NOTE… The Otters hit a cool .371 (32–9–62) in Saturday's sweep of Dominican. That mark ranks No. 8 on the Otter list for attack percentage in a match.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT vs. MICHIGAN TECH… POINTS: Savanna Maker 14.0; KILLS: Savanna Maker 10; BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 7; ACES: Mollin Helfrich/Savanna Maker/Ashley Vanderpan 1; DIGS: Sam Chavez 19.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT vs. DOMINICAN… POINTS: Savanna Maker 12.5; KILLS: Savanna Maker 7; BLOCKS: Savanna Maker 4; ACES: Ashley Vanderpan 5; DIGS: Sam Chavez 10.

THE LAST WORD… "Overall it was a solid day of volleyball. We came out strong against a very talented Tech team, fighting for every point. We didn't hold onto that loss; we learned and learned quickly! Ash really ran the offense well today, and our serve and pass game really picked up. It was great to see the pins get in a rhythm and stay strong for their back row attacks." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Rocky Mountains to take part in the Steel City Showcase hosted by Colorado State Pueblo September 2–3. CSUMB will open play Friday against Davis & Elkins.
