Otters Sign With Opendorse For NIL Education And Support

CSUMB becomes first CCAA program team with athlete endorsement industry leader

April 05, 2022

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay is excited to partner with Opendorse to launch a Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) readiness program designed to help Otter student–athletes build their personal brands.
CSUMB becomes the first California Collegiate Athletic Association member to partner with Opendorse, joining more than 70,000 athletes and 2,000 organizations in taking this proactive approach to provide solutions to help student–athletes and their supporters build, protect and monetize their brand value.

"Our vision is to be a NCAA Division II leader in our pursuit of student-athlete success. This partnership with Opendorse supports that vision and connects us to industry experts in the evolving NIL landscape," says CSUMB Director of Athletics Kirby Garry (@kirbygarry). "To be among a select group of Division II programs that have invested in a department wide partnership with Opendorse is proof we are taking the steps necessary to educate and empower our student–athletes in the rapidly changing landscape of college athletics and position them for success during their time at CSUMB and beyond."

"I am thrilled for this new partnership with Opendorse and the opportunities for our current and future student–athletes as they grow in the NIL space," says CSUMB Associate Athletic Director Moe Melhart. "We are excited to give our athletes the opportunity to build their brand, tell their story and for all of them to have the chance to partner with companies and organizations that take interest in all the hard work that goes into being a student athlete."

The Opendorse platform offers a variety of tools to help Otter student–athletes build custom brand value assessments and access educational tools related to key areas such as brand building, monetization, and financial literacy. CSUMB will use the Opendorse NIL package – Opendorse Ready™, Monitor™, and Social™ – to continue its mission of supporting student–athlete success by offering the market's best resources.

With Opendorse, Otter student–athletes will be better prepared to understand, build, and protect their brands with the industry's leading education, marketing and compliance technology.

"This is such a unique opportunity for CSUMB student–athletes to take ownership of their story and image and to create a brand," says CSUMB Volleyball Head Coach Courtney Materazzi. "To work with Opendorse, a company that has a deep understanding of the NIL rules, will be so valuable. I'm excited for the student–athletes to engage with companies and organizations in our community and their own, not only to foster connections, but also gain experience and confidence."

"I think this is such a great opportunity for athletes to put their name out there and make a brand for themselves," says All–CCAA golfer Isabel Carpenter. "I also think it's a cool way to meet new businesses in the community that want to support CSUMB and our student–athletes."

"The ability for us as student–athletes to connect with companies and brands near and far through such a user-friendly interface is an exciting step towards getting the most out of the new NIL opportunities," says Otter volleyball star Mollin Helfrich. "I am excited for all the athletes and the opportunity that we have here at CSUMB."
