Otters Split With Toros, Lock Up No. 5 Seed

CSUMB wins Game 1 on Ally Alcayaga’s walk-off blast, falls 3–2 in nightcap

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay locked up the No. 5 seed in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament by splitting a drama–filled doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings then won the opener on a walk-off home run from freshman Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) in the eighth, 4–3. The Toros erased a 2–0 deficit then took the nightcap on Raquel Jaime's solo shot in the seventh, 4–3.

CSUMB improved to 32–18 overall and 17–17 in the CCAA. Dominguez Hills is now 34–16 and 22–12.

The Otters will play either Dominguez Hills or Sonoma State in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament next Thursday in Seaside.

Toro starter Alyssa Olague had the Otters' number for most of the opener. The only mistake she made came in the form of an Oli Perez (Ceres HS) solo shot in the second.

But, trailing 3–1, the Otters finally broke through in the seventh thanks to an error and a Haley Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) double. Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) forced extra innings with an RBI triple to deep right. Alcayaga then walked it off an inning later.

Things started well for the Otters in Game 2 when Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) drew a bases–loaded walk and Clay hit a sacrifice fly to give the Otters an early 2–0 lead.

The Toros got one back in the fourth when pinch hitter Katie Sturm was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. They tied it in the sixth when a throwing error led to the Otters misplaying the subsequent first–third play that allowed the tying run to score.

Jaime then led off the seventh with the homer that broke the tie and provided the winning margin.

SEVENTH HEAVEN… Ally Alcayaga hit her team leading seventh home run of the season in Friday's Game 1 win over Dominguez Hills. She is the first Otter freshman to hit as many as seven home runs in a season since Courtney Hennings hit seven in 2016.
