Otters Split With Dominguez Hills Again Saturday

Otters and Toros will meet in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament next week

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Dominguez Hills split a softball doubleheader for the second consecutive day Saturday, with the Otters taking the opener 6–2 and the Toros winning the nightcap, 5–0, at the Otter Sports Complex.

The end result of the 4–game series split is that the Otters and Toros will face each other again in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament next Thursday in Seaside. CSUMB (33–19, 18–18 CCAA) earned the No. 5 seed while CSUDH (35–17, 23–13) will be the No. 4 seed.

CSUMB scored two runs in each of the first three innings to take control in the opener. Ashley Honorio Stockton/Bear Creek HS) had her first 4–hit game and scored a pair of runs to lead the 12–hit Otter attack. Jessilyn Barrow (Folsom HS) added an RBI triple and Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) doubled and scored twice.

Dominguez Hills opened the game with a triple and RBI single from the first two batters. But senior Jensen Main (Stevenson School/Sacramento State) slammed the door after that, tossing 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball until the Toros scored a consolation run with two outs in the seventh.

With their playoff seeding secure, Head Coach Andrea Kenney used the finale to get her seniors some playing time in their final regular season home games. Toro starter Ashley Wies took advantage of the makeshift to twirl her third shutout of the season, limiting the Otters to four hits.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Jessica Cross's RBI single in the third gave the Otters a 6–1 lead. With Jensen Main in control, the Toros never got the tying run as far as the on deck circle for the balance of the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Ashley Wies got Ivana Perez to line into an inning–ending double play representing the potential tying run in the sixth inning.

POSTSEASON BOUND… The Otters are headed to the postseason for the ninth time in their 13 seasons of NCAA postseason eligibility.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… In her final regular season at bat, senior Andrea Duran drove a line drive through the left side for her first collegiate hit.

MAIN IN THE TOP 5… Jensen Main improved to 22–8 with the win in Game 1 Saturday. That moves her past Cori Reinhardt (2014) for the fifth most wins in a season in Otter history.

WHEN THREE (BASES) EQUALS FOUR… Jessilyn Barrow hit her seventh triple of 2022 to tie her with Cori Reinhardt (2012) for the second most triples in a season in Otter history. Angelina Orozco set the Otter record with nine triples in 2012.

EXTRA BASES, GAME 1… DOUBLES: Abby Alcayaga (7). TRIPLES: Jessilyn Barrow (7). HOME RUNS: None.

EXTRA BASES, GAME 2… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (13). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Toros will meet again on the opening day of the CCAA Championship Tournament next Thursday (May 5) at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
