Björken Just Misses School, Tournament Record At CCAA Championship

Freshman Simon Björken cards a 64, one stroke off CSUMB record

April 12, 2022

BROOKS, Calif. — Freshman Simon Björken (Hudiksval, Sweden) climbed back into contention in the second round of the CCAA Championship Tournament with a sizzling 64 Tuesday at Yocha Dehe Golf Club.

Björken's 64 is the second lowest round in Otter history, just one stroke behind the CSUMB and CCAA Tournament record 63 carded by Eric Justensen during the 2005 Championship at Hunter Ranch. The only other Otter ever to shoot 64 in a collegiate match was Brandon Hortt, who did it, coincidentally, at the 2013 CCAA Championship at Hunter Ranch.

Björken birdied nine of the first 12 holes before playing the final six at par. That was enough to leave him at 8–under for the day and 3–over for the tournament. He currently sits five strokes off the pace of 2–under 142 set by Matthew Pennington of Cal State San Marcos.

Fellow Otter freshman Jack Deaner (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) joined Björken in the Top 10 after carding a 70 Tuesday and 6–over 150 through 36 holes. Freshmen Liam Allder (Sundsvall, Sweden) and Ryan Parry (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) added CSUMB's final two scoring rounds Tuesday, shooting 78 and 79 respectively.

CSUMB sits in sixth place on the team leaderboard,22 strokes behind leader Somona State entering Wednesday's final round. Follow the action live online at the links above.
