One School Record, Nine PRs For Otters At Oxy Distance Carnival

Mina Tsai sets school record in the long jump at 16–6

March 14, 2022

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay athletes recorded nine more personal records Saturday when the Otter track and field team competed at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic at Oxy's Bill Henry Track.

Freshman Mina Tsai (San Jose/Santa Tersa HS) made the biggest splash by setting the CSUMB long jump record with a leap of 16–6 (5.02 meters). That was more than half a foot better than the previous record of 15–9 set by Ayokemi Popoola in March of 2020. She becomes the first Otter to qualify for the CCAA Championship meet in the event.

Rounding out her big day, Tsai ran the fifth–fastest 100 meter race in program history with a 13.26.

Freshman Taylar Yost (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield HS) also etched her name on the Otter all–time best marks list with a personal record 16.77 in the 100 hurdles. That's the fourth fastest time in CSUMB history and just missed being a CCAA qualifying mark. Yost also PRed in the 400 with a 1:05.03.

Other Otter PRs came from Elyse Valdivia (800); Hannah Marin (5,000); Mackenzie Caprino, Natalie Harper and Sierra Shaver (steeplechase) and Kim Tovar (1,500).

"The day was long, hot and very dry. In spite of these things, the team stepped up and rocked some record performances again," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "The team produced strong numbers in many events. We're looking at next weekend to keep things rolling."

The Otters will jump right back into action Saturday when they head to the capital for the Sacramento State Hornet Invitational Mar. 19.
