Otters Race To Big Lead, Defeat Sonoma State 62–53

Otters use early 19–0 run to take control

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay raced to a big lead in the first half then kept visiting Sonoma State at arm's length down the stretch to earn a 62–53 victory Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/UC Riverside) led a total team effort with her best statistical game of the season, combining seven rebounds and six assists to her game–high 22 points. Junior forward Rebecca Castillo (L.A. Valley College) came off the bench to score a season–high 11 points while freshman center Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) added a season–high four steals.

The game was back–and–forth until late in the first quarter when the Otters began a 19–0 run. It started with a Castillo runner in the paint with 2:04 left in the first quarter and ended with a Pointer 3–ball 4:47 into the second.

By the time the dust had settle, the Otters were up 30–13 and in control.

The Seawolves chipped the lead to 10 at the half, 35–25. Although they got to within eight points a handful of times in the second half, they never got closer than three possessions from the first possession of second quarter on.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Frances Potts free throw gave the Otters a 60–51 lead with 22 seconds remaining.

20–20 VISION… With 25 points Thursday against Cal Poly Humboldt and 22 Saturday against Sonoma State, Lauryn Pointer became the first Otter to post consecutive 20–point games this season. She is the first Otter to turn that trick since Sylvia Vartazarian did it against Chico State (20 pts) and Cal State San Bernardino (24 pts) Dec. 12–14, 2019.

LARGE MARGINS… CSUMB's 18–point lead (48–30) in Saturday's 62–53 win over Sonoma State was its largest in the second half of any game this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 22; REBOUNDS: Lauryn Pointer 7; ASSISTS: Lauryn Pointer 6; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Sarah Shaw 4.

THE LAST WORD… "Today's win was an all–around team effort. We still have a ways to go but overall proud of my team. We needed today and earned the victory." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua-Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the final time in the regular season by starting a 4–game trip with a doubleheader at Chico State Thursday (Feb. 10). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
