O’Mahony Named First Team Academic All–American®

Colin O’Mahony becomes CSUMB’s sixth Academic All–American since 2013

December 07, 2022

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior defender Colin O'Mahony (Cork, Ireland) added another feather to his already crowded cap by earning first team Academic All–America® honors as selected by the College Sports Communicators. He is the only CCAA men's or women's soccer player to earn the award in 2022.

He is the sixth Otter to earn the award in the last 10 seasons and the second Otter men's soccer player so honored. Walmer Martinez, who currently plays professionally for Monterey Bay F.C., earned the distinction following his senior season in 2019.

"We are really excited that Colin received another award on top of the many that he has won already," says CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap. "This speaks volume of the type of player and person that Colin is."

O'Mahony carries a 3.97 GPA as a kinesiology major. He has another year of eligibility remaining, but will graduate this spring and plans to pursue a master's degree and a professional playing career.

O'Mahony was named the 2022 CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first Otter in CSUMB's 18–season history of CCAA play to earn one of the league's major awards. He anchored an Otter defensive that tossed a CSUMB record six shutouts in 11 CCAA matches. He added his best offensive season, including a team–leading four assists and an Olimpico goal in a win over Cal State San Marcos.
