Second Half Surge Comes Up Just Short as Otters Fall 58-57

Otters take the Gators to the final possession, come up just short.

SAN FRANCISCO – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball battled couldn't get its final shot to drop as the final horn sounded, falling 58–57 at San Francisco State Saturday afternoon in The Swamp.

After falling behind by as many as 20 points in the first half, the Otters out–scored the Gators 34–19 in the second half. A pair of Samiya Terry (Long Beach Wilson HS) free throws got the Otters to within one with 33 seconds remaining.

Terry then stole the rebound away after the Gators missed a free throw and called timeout, giving the Otters ball at midcourt with 3.3 seconds left. Amelia Smith (Los Banos HS/Merced College) drove strong to the paint, but her running jumper rolled off the rim, allowing SFSU to escape with the win.

Kiki Griffin (San Jose/Sierra College) led the Otters with a career-best 19 points and five rebounds. Terry and Smith also posted career highs with 13 points and 11 points respectively.

___________________________________________________________________________

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Amelia Smith was unable to get a contested running jumper to fall as time expired.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES… The Otters fell behind 39–23 at the half, scoring a season–low six points in the first quarter. They completely flipped the script in half number two, out-scoring the Gators 34–19, including a season–high 23 points in the third quarter.

GRIFFIN HEATS UP… After starting the month 3-for-23 from the floor, Kiki Griffin is catching fire as 2022 comes to a close. She went a season–best 7-for-13 from the floor Saturday as part of her season–high 19–point game. She is now 10 for her last 20 from the floor.

TERRY HEATS UP TOO… Samiya Terry set a career high in scoring for the second consecutive game, scoring 13 points Saturday at S.F. State.  Even more impressively, she did all of her scoring in just 18 minutes off the bench. She added a career–high three steals for good measure.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kiki Griffin 19. REBOUNDS: Kiki Griffin/Sarah Shaw 6. ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 4. BLOCKS: None. STEALS: Samiya Terry 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the Kelp Bed to take on Cal Poly Humboldt Thursday (Jan. 5).  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.

GO OTTERS!
