Otters Down Lincoln in Physical Contest

Monterey Bay’s defense steps up in 52-50 victory.

SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay closed out its nonconference slate with a 52–50 victory over Lincoln University Monday afternoon inside the Kelp Bed.

Momentum swung back and forth in this one, but the Otters (4–6 overall) stifled the Lincoln (2–10) attack in the fourth quarter to earn the win.  Lincoln led by as many as 11 in the second half, but Monterey Bay held the Oaks to 15 points in the final 15 minutes, allowing the offense to do just enough to earn the victory.

Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) scored nine of her season-high 11 points in the first quarter.  Samiya Terry (Long Beach/Wilson HS) also reached double figures for the first time in her young career, scoring 10 on a perfect 5-5 shooting clip.

Kiki Griffin (San Jose/Sierra College) brought down a career–best nine rebounds, while Amelia Smith (Los Banos/Merced College) and Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/UC Merced) each added three assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the Otters stifling defense would not allow the Lady Oaks to fire off a shot in the final ten seconds of the game.

NOT SINCE 2013–14... CSUMB's 4–1 non-conference record this season is the best since the 2013–14 season, when the Otters went a perfect 3–0 against non–CCAA opponents. Interestingly enough, that season was the first under the direction of Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto, similar to this season being the first under the direction of Head Coach Sarah Hopkins-Chery.

SHE'S ON A TERRY… In the absence of leading scorer Lauryn Pointer, the Otters needed someone to turn to to be a leading offensive presence, and that someone was Samiya Terry. Terry scored in double-figures for the first time in her Otter career, knocking down all five of her field goal attempts. Her previous high game was six points last season vs. Sonoma State.

START STRONG, FINISH STRONG… The Otters outscored Lincoln 30–20 in the first and fourth quarters Monday afternoon. CSUMB opened the contest on a 15–3 run to seize momentum. When it came to the fourth quarter, the Otters held Lincoln to just nine points to close out the victory.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez 11. REBOUNDS: Kiki Griffin 9. ASSISTS: Amelia Smith/Mikayla Mabie 3. BLOCKS: Amelia Smith/Abbey Hadsell/Kiki Griffin 1. STEALS: Mikayla Mabie 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to CCAA play on Saturday, Dec. 31, when they hit the road to do battle with San Francisco State.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.

GO OTTERS!
