Shaw’s Strong Showing Not Enough At San Marcos

Sarah Shaw returns to the hardwood with a double-double

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Sophomore Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) returned to the hardwood in impressive fashion after missing Thursday's game at Cal State L.A., but it wasn't enough to stop No. 16 Cal State San Marcos from taking a 76–46 decision from Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday afternoon at CSUSM's Sport Center.

Shaw posted her second double–double of the season, finishing with 12 points and a game–high 11 rebounds. But the Cougars' tenacious defense closed the door on everybody else, allowing San Marcos to pull away in a dominant fourth quarter to make the final appear more lopsided than most of the game was played.

In addition to her double–double, Shaw finished two assists, and two steals. Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/UC Merced) and Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) added eight points apiece.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Dynnah Buckner buried a 3-pointer with 4:25 to go to push the Cougars ahead 66–44.

WELCOME BACK, SARAH SHAW… Noticeably absent in Monterey Bay's Thursday night tilt with Cal State L.A., Sarah Shaw returned to action today and did everything she could to try and will the Otters back into this game.  Shaw finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds, good for her second double-double on the season, and the fourth of her young career.  Known as a tenacious rebounder, Shaw is now averaging 7.5 rebounds per game, ranking her in the top-10 in the CCAA.

OFFENSIVE GLASS EATERS… The Otters reeled in 16 offensive rebounds against San Marcos, second only to the 21 they brought down against Holy Names on Nov. 12.  Sarah Shaw  and Amelia Smith combined for 11 of those sixteen offensive boards.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sarah Shaw 12. REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 11. ASSISTS: Sarah Shaw/Amelia Smith 2. BLOCKS: Gigi Israel/Abbey Hadsell 1. STEALS: Sarah Shaw/Amelia Smith 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otter will return to The Kelp Bed to take on Lincoln University (Calif.) on Monday, December 19. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
