San Bernardino Gets Revenge In Four

#16 Coyotes avenge early season loss to Otters

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't complete the season sweep of nationally–ranked Cal state San Bernardino as the No. 16 Coyotes pulled away late to earn a 25–18, 15–25, 25–11, 25–20 win over the Otters Friday night in the Coyote Den.

CSUMB shocked the (then) No. 10 ranked Coyotes in five sets when the teams met in Seaside on Sept. 10. Through two sets Friday, CSUMB seemed poised to give an encore performance.

But San Bernardino rallied from a virtuoso performance by the Otters in 25–15 Set 2 win with a dominating 25–11 win of its own to retake control of the match. The fourth set was tight throughout, with CSUMB leading as late at 17–16, before San Bernardino finally put the match away.

Senior middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) led three Otter attackers in double figures with 12 kills. Fellow middle Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) added 11 kills. They each hit a team–leading .333 for the match.

Nolte and Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) led the net defense with three blocks apiece. Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the backline with 26 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A Jenna Patton kill capped a 6–0 San Bernardino run that turned a 17–16 Otter lead into a 22–17 deficit in the fourth set.

IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THE FINAL MATCH… With a team–leading 12 kills Friday, Mollin Helfrich moved up to No. 18 on the Otter career kills list with 420. She shares the spot with fellow Otter senior Lauren Reeves, whose eight kills Friday leave her with 420 as well as the duo prepares for their final collegiate match Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona.

LUCKY No. 13… Sam Chavez collected 26 digs Friday night at Cal state San Bernardino. That is tied for No. 13 on the Otter list for digs in a 4–set match. The last Otter to record that many digs in a 4–setter was, well, Sam Chavez, who had 27 on Sept. 9 against Cal Poly Pomona. The record is held by, well, Sam Chavez, who posted 36 digs at Stanislaus State on Sept. 21, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Mollin Helfrich 12. BLOCKS: Kennedy Adams/Mikayla Nolte 3. ACES: Kaila Uoata 2. ASSISTS: Aly Fullbright 36. DIGS: Sam Chavez 26.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will get one final chance to knock off a nationally–ranked opponent when they head west on I–10 to face No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona for a rare 2 p.m. matinee in Kellogg Arena. It will mark CSUMB's 2022 season finale.

GO OTTERS!
