Otters Close Season With Loss At No. 23 Pomona

Mollin Helfrich leads the way with 10 kills and six blocks in her final collegiate match

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team said farewell to the 2022 season with a 25–16, 25–16, 25–23 loss to No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona Saturday afternoon in Kellogg Arena. It ended the toughest roadtrip of the season, which also featured a close loss at No. 16 Cal State San Bernardino Friday evening.

CSUMB stayed close in the first and third sets Saturday. The Broncos pulled away late in the first and then hung on in a very competitive third set to close the match.

Senior middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) had a strong statline in her final collegiate match, leading the Otters with 10 kills, a .450 attack percentage and six total blocks. Junior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) just missed her third double–double of the season, finishing with nine kills and 10 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Otter service error on match point allowed the Broncos to escape with a 2–point win in the final set.

HELFRICH WITH THE COMEBACK VICTORY… Seniors Mollin Helfrich and Lauren Reeves went into the weekend vying for the No. 18 spot on the Otter career kills list. Helfrich came back to tie Reeves at 420 after Friday's match at San Bernardino. Saturday, Helfrich put down 10 kills in 20 attempts while Reeves managed two in 19 swings. That leaves Helfirch at No. 18 (431) and Reeves at No. 19 (422). Both are incredible efforts considering both players missed an entire season due to COVID.

HELFRICH ON THE ATTACK… By hitting .450 Saturday (10–1–20), Mollin Helfrich solidified her hold on the No. 3 spot on the Otter career attack percentage list at .285. Lauren Reeves also earned a place on that list at No. 22 (.185).

FULLBRIGHT LENDS A HAND…  With 15 assists Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona, Aly Fullbright will end her career No. 9 on the Otter career assist list with 786.

SHE'S ACES… Kaylie Honberger served two more aces Saturday afternoon at Cal Poly Pomona and ends her junior season ranked No. 12 on the Otter career service aces list with 69. Looking ahead to next season, she needs 10 more aces to pass Head Coach Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi for the No. 9 spot on the list.

DIGS THIS… Sam Chavez collected the final 10 digs of her collegiate career Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona and ends her time in Otter blue and gold No. 11 in career digs with 855.

ON THE BLOCKS… With a team–high six blocks Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona, Mollin Helfrich ends her collegiate career ranked No. 7 on the all–time blocks list with 189. Note that sophomore Mikayla Nolte finished with 80 blocks in 2022 (No. 12 on the single–season list) and enters her junior season with 87.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mollin Helfrich 13.0; KILLS: Mollin Helfrich 10; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 6; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 2; DIGS: Sam Chavez/Kaylie Honberger 10.

THE LAST WORD… "Congratulations to our seniors on wrapping up their careers. In their time at Monterey, they've gone through so many transitions- from being a young team to start- — to a pandemic — to a coaching change. We hope they lean into the lessons from that journey as they start their off court and post athlete moments! Thank you, seniors." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's match concluded the 2022 Otter volleyball season.
